In the heart of our nation’s capital, beyond the city streets, 1,800 animals from six continents converge. Desert, water, grasslands, and jungle collide. Smithsonian Channel and the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C. team up to give viewers access to this extraordinary place and the vast array of diverse creatures that call it home in a unique new web series. WILD INSIDE THE NATIONAL ZOO brings viewers stories about new baby animals, the humans who take care of the animals and their caretakers, and explores the changing seasons and stories inside one of D.C.’s wildest tourist destinations. The new series is: www.smithsonianchannel.com/wildinside

Smithsonian Channel kicks off the series with “Bao Bao’s First Year.” Launching this week -- just days before Bao Bao’s actual first birthday on August 23 -- this special episode celebrates the Zoo’s famed baby giant panda and marks the one-year occasion in a special way. From teething, to climbing to training, Bao Bao has grown quickly over the past year, and it’s shaping up to be another busy year.

Each month, WILD INSIDE THE NATIONAL ZOO will bring SmithsonianChannel.com visitors a new animal story, told first-hand from the humans who know them best.  Viewers will get a rare glimpse behind the scenes with some of the zoo favorites as well as lesser known inhabitants. The web series will offer a monthly backstage pass to new, unexpected animal encounters—from watching panda cub Bao Bao, to seeing what it takes to manage a lion pride’s baby boom.

In the second webisode, viewers will be given a glimpse into the Zoo’s pride of lions. A baby boom among the big cats has produced a playful pride with lots of personality. In “Lion Pride,” premiering on September 15, 2014, viewers will see how the caretakers train the lion cubs to participate in their own healthcare, and watch their unique personalities progress as they grow.

WILD INSIDE THE NATIONAL ZOO is produced by Smithsonian Channel and Run Riot Films.
