BIG C Season 2 Synopsis

SHOWTIME’s dark comedy series THE BIG C returns for a second season this summer. Laura Linney stars in her Golden Globe-winning role as Cathy Jamison, a reserved, Minneapolis wife/mother/teacher whose cancer diagnosis forces her to shake up her life and find hope, humor and the light side of a dark situation.

Last season, depicted as summer on the show, a newly diagnosed Cathy made some drastic, dramatic adjustments to her perfect, structured life, namely forcing her immature husband Paul (Oliver Platt) to grow up and her bratty teenage son Adam (Gabrielle Basso) to shape up. Her homeless brother Sean’s (John Benjamin Hickey) unlikely fling with her ex-best friend Rebecca (special guest star Cynthia Nixon) resulted in a pregnancy. Meanwhile, Adam and Cathy’s smart-alecky student Andrea (special guest star Gabourey Sidibe) sparked an unconventional friendship.

As we move into ‘fall’ for season two, a now well-seasoned Cathy (Laura Linney) has progressed from Denial to Anger on the grief cycle and will become an all-out warrior in the fight against her Stage 4 melanoma, while Paul (Oliver Platt) finally steps up to become her greatest advocate and treatment “cancierge.” She also finds allies in her oncologist Dr. Atticus Sherman (special guest appearance by Alan Alda) and charming new buddy Lee (guest star Hugh Dancy), a fellow patient in an experimental clinical trial. Adam (Gabriel Basso), who sparks an odd friendship with an older woman (guest star Parker Posey), and Andrea’s (special guest star Gabourey Sidibe) bond strengthens; and Sean (John Benjamin Hickey), now living in Marlene’s (special guest star Phyllis Somerville) old house, ponders fatherhood as he rides the insufferable, emotional rollercoaster that is Rebecca’s (special guest star Cynthia Nixon) pregnancy.
