Barry Avrich

(Director)


Through the power of the arts, business and the media, Barry Avrich has created an unparalleled connection with people around the world and made a difference. As a leading marketing executive, film producer and arts philanthropist, he has entertained, enlightened and helped millions of people for the past twenty six years. His accomplishments as a marketing professional, producer and philanthropist have established him as one of the most respected public figures today.

As consummate creative soul, Barry Avrich has built two advertising agencies. and has worked and developed hundreds of marketing campaigns for clients such as American Express, Starbucks, Cineplex, Dundee, The Rolling Stones, Pan Am Toronto 2015 and countless others. Barry was awarded the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2009. Barry has authored and published three marketing books that have been utilized in several leading universities in Canada and the USA. 

Barry has also produced and directed 20 documentary films including the critically acclaimed The Last Mogul and Unlikely Obsession  and he has produced The Tempest and Caesar and Cleopatra both starring the Oscar winning actor Christopher Plummer.

Aside from his philanthropic work with organizations such as Best Buddies, Toronto Film Festival, The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, U for Change, Barry created and built the world’s first state of the art cinema in a hospital in 2008. The Hollywood Theatre at Sick Kids in Toronto screens first run films for patients.                       

 

Debbie Nightingale

Debbie is the Nightingale behind the Nightingale Company.  Well versed in the film and television industry, Debbie has been actively involved in production and other aspects of the industry since 1979.  She has produced feature films, television series, documentaries and kids’ series as well as numerous events in the industry over the last number of years.

Debbie was the Founding Executive Director of the Hot Docs International Documentary Festival and also grew the Industry Centre and its programmes at the Toronto International Film Festival into the 10 day major event it is today. 

Nightingale was Assistant Program Director at C CHANNEL, one of Canada’s first pay-tv broadcasters, from 1981-1982.  She held the position of Special Projects and Development Officer at the Ontario Film Development Corporation from its inception in 1985 through 1988 where she evaluated and made recommendations on the business and creative aspects of feature films and television projects.  Nightingale has sat on Boards including Toronto Women in Film and Television and the Canadian Independent Film Caucus (DOC) in recent years.
